Putting BSL onto TV programmes – a simple guide

Our transcribers view programmes on tape, type the script and put it onto an autocue machine.

Our deaf translators study the script and consult with deaf English language experts for the best translation.

Autocue on the front of the camera displays the script, which the translator reads and interprets into BSL.

The Autocue operator keeps time with the soundtrack of the programme.

The translator stands in front of a blue screen. Using a process called Chromakey, s/he can be superimposed over the programme.

The Chromakey removes anything that is blue in the picture, including the blue screen, and replaces it with the picture of the original programme.
