About sign language

BSL has been described as a visual-gestural language.

It’s a language which uses finger-spelling, hand and upper body movement and facial expression to convey meaning. It is as expressive as any other language - rich and sometimes beautiful.

Different sign language dialects are used up and down the country – just as English has regional dialects.

The BSL used on TV tries to avoid dialect, so that it can be understood easily nationwide.
