The huddle, used in many sports, originated at Gallaudet University in 1892.
American football quarterback Paul Hubbard noticed that opposing deaf teams could see his team talks, so he organised the players into a tight circle so sign language could be openly used but not seen by the other team.
The huddle was then adopted by other deaf teams and it became an integral part of the game. Now it is widely used in many sports all over the world to boost team spirit and player morale.
