Deaf charities have welcomed YouTube’s decision to add automatic subtitles to its English language videos.
Susan Daniels, chief executive of the National Deaf Children’s Society called the decision by parent company Google “fantastic news”.
She said: “NDCS is delighted that Google is committed to breaking down communication barriers facing deaf children and helping them fully engage with the world around them.”
The RNID’s Emma Harrison added: “Captioning will significantly help a deaf person’s understanding of video content and increase their ability to share experiences of watching those in which speech plays a prominent part.”
The automatic subtitles will use speech recognition technology and follows a partial rollout last year on a small number of YouTube’s channels.
Although the feature is only initially available on English language videos, it is expected other languages will be added later this year.
