Thousands of car manufacturing jobs look set to be safeguarded after a multi-million pound government investment.
Nissan will begin production of its new electric car – the Leaf – in 2013 after receiving a £20.7 million government grant. £220 million is also set to be made available from the European Investment Bank.
The manufacturer says the ‘Leaf’ will be the world’s first affordable mass-produced zero emission car, and around 50,000 a year will role off its Sunderland production line.
Meanwhile Ford’s investment in cleaner cars received a boost with the announcement of £360m in loan guarantees safeguarding about 2,800 jobs.
