Police have confirmed a serious fire at a block of flats in South Shields was started deliberately.

15 people had to be rescued when the fire broke out yesterday morning in Anderson Street. 5 fire crews were needed to put out the flames. One girl had to be saved from a second storey balcony.

Some residents jumped from the burning building, with 3 suffering serious injuries.
