Music lovers are being targeted as this year’s Tinnitus Awareness Week gets underway.
The British Tinnitus Association (BTA) campaign will highlight the risks of exposure to loud music as well as the effect of stress on tinnitus after a BTA survey found that 75% of sufferers said that stress either caused or exacerbated their tinnitus.
A free music event in London tonight will bring together more than 20 international DJs and musicians, all of whom suffer from tinnitus.
Organisers hope the event will increase awareness of tinnitus and encourage people to protect their ears to prevent permanent hearing damage.
Roy Bratby, chairman of the BTA said: “Callers to our helpline regularly report that stress and exposure to loud music can cause and exacerbate tinnitus, highlighting the need to educate and inform people about these two issues during our campaign.”
Tinnitus affects around five million people in the UK and currently there is no cure.
