A US mother has been forced to defend her decision to give her daughter cochlear implants.
Miriam Masia spoke after her daughter Caroline won a competition for an essay she wrote about regaining her hearing after cochlear implants – and sparked controversy with some activists claiming she was contributing to the discrimination of deaf people.
Blogger Robert Mason said news reports of her were “very troublesome” because she was being portrayed as “a true miracle and success without any ‘deaf’ features.”
Ms Masia said of cochlear implants: “People in the deaf community are very split and emotions run very high on both sides of the issue.
“Many people in the Deaf community believe we mutilated her.
“As far as Robert Mason…I completely respect his and others right to live in the deaf community and speak sign language but unfortunately they don’t respect my choice to have our daughter be a part of the hearing world which is our community.”
